Understand How the Novel Corona Virus Can Affect the Men Fertility

The COVID-19 Pandemic has no doubt, create havoc in our lives. The virus was first detected at the end of 2019, however, since the start of 2020, the world has all gone upside down, and a lot is happening since then. We have all witnessed since the past couple days of how the virus has been affecting a vast number of people. Not only just affecting our health, but it has also consumed several lives which is alarming. However, several studies have been running, which show how coronavirus affects the multiple organs of the body. However, as per the reviews, it has come to the limelight that one organ that it predominantly affects is the testicles.

However, the next question in your mind surely would be how exactly does coronavirus enters the human body and then multiplies, eventually affecting the organs. Here is how:

The ACE2 (Angiotensin Converting Enzymes 2) receptors are the key factors in the COVID-19 pandemic. In real. The coronavirus binds to the ACE2 receptors inside the cell which enter the cells and eventually multiplies. As and when the virus multiplies and comes emerging out in the cells, the host cell dies off. The cell which has a higher concentration of ACE2 gets more prone to being attacked by the virus. Hence, this is where the picture of testicles comes into the picture. There have been studies that show that there are multiple testicular cells that do have a higher concentration of ACE2 in them, and that is precisely why they are prone to get affected by the COVID Virus.

Amongst the wide variety of the testicular cells, there are four main types of cells with vast amounts of ACE2:

   1.  Spermatogonia

   2.  Leydig Cells

   3.  Seminiferous duct cells

   4.  Sertoli cells

If these cells get destructed in terms of their liability to produce more sperms inside the testicles, this can eventually lead to infertility.

However, one positive news, amongst the many shocks is that these effects are not permanent and are short-lived. That is as, and when the individual who tested positive for COVID-19, tests negative again, then he can produce the average level of sperms. Some specialists have stated that the effect of the COVID-19 on the fertility of the man is just similar to any influenza virus that affects the sperm’s production for a short period. There are no studies that prove that this effect can stay for a longer time in men.

COVID-19 has also caused Orchitis, which means – the inflammation of one or both of the testicles.

How to Protect Ourself from getting affected by the novel coronavirus?

Although to date there are no full-proof methods that can protect the individual from the coronavirus, there are many precautions which an individual can surely take such as maintaining social distancing, using a sanitizer, wearing a mask, etc. Here are some of the tried methods that can only help but nor guarantee you to get rid of the virus:
